Inicia la Comisión Ballenera Internacional en Eslovenia

Ayer inició la 65 reunión de la Comisión Ballenera Internacional (CBI) en Eslovenia. Hoy se sostuvo el Comité de Conservación donde importantes recomendaciones se llevarán a plenaria el próximo lunes para ser sujetas a discusión. Entre ellas, darle un nuevo enfasis al apoyo de proyectos de investigación del fondo voluntario de pequenhos cetáceos donde la prioridad será para temas de conservación en áreas donde el apoyo financiero sea más necesario. También, se hizo evidente que la contribución de la CBI sobre temas globales como residuos marinos necesita del trabajo coordinado con otras instituciones con interes en el tema y que la falta de evidencias sobre los impactos directos que los residuos puedan tener sobre las ballenas no es escusa para no continuar con esfuerzos para remover los residuos del mar.

Yesterday was initiated the 65 International Commission Meeting (IWC) in Slovenia. Today, in the Conservation Committee important recommendations were raised to the next Plenary of the IWC on monday to be discussed. Among them, the new emphasis of the voluntary fund for small cetaceans where the priority conservation topics will be given to areas where conservation problems are likely to not be address due to lack of economical support from local governments. Also, it was evident that the contribution from the IWC about global topics such as marine debris needs a coordinated effort with other institutions with regards to the topic. The lack of evidence about the direct impacts that debri might have in whales is not an excuse to not work with the efforts to clean and remove them from the sea.
